Box Of Frogs

  • Audio introduction to Box of Frogs

Box Of Frogs is a spectacular circus ensemble with a difference. 5 acrobats and 2 musicians play with the audience’s expectations of mental ill health and performance, against a back drop of filmic illusions. What is colourful character or delusional insanity? What is grand achievement or pointless obsession? Stumble veer with absolute absorption in a fervent love of all things circus.

Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder. Most people experience ups and downs. It is only when these become so extreme that they interfere with ordinary everyday activities, and cause you to behave in uncharacteristic ways, that it is called Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression. Between mood swings people with the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder feel and behave like anyone else with the ordinary ups and downs that anyone can experience. But the extreme highs and lows can affect not only feeling, but also thoughts and behaviour.

Box of Frogs has been commissioned by the Unlimited programme, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Unlimited encourages collaborations and partnerships between disability arts organisations, disabled and deaf artists, producers and mainstream organisations to celebrate the inspiration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and to create original and exciting works. Twenty-nine Unlimited Commissions have been awarded.

Box of Frogs was produced by XTRAX and supported by Jacksons Lane.

A tweet from an audience member at ARC

“It is the unhappy marriage of physicality and mental instability that enables Box of Frogs to convey a visceral, memorable experience. While not a typically delightful tale, the generous range of performances ensures that the sheer joy of going to the circus is not abandoned.” Remote Goat
