Box of Frogs performed at Jacksons Lane Theatre, London for 3 nights in April 2012 as part of the London Roundhouse’s 2012CircusFest.

In 2011 Stumble continued the journey they started with Bipolar Ringmaster (without a Circus) with a spectacular ensemble, ‘Box of Frogs.’ It is a circus show with a difference. 5 acrobats and 2 musicians play with the audience’s expectations from their own perspective of mental ill health and performance, against a back drop of filmic illusions. What is colourful character or delusional insanity? What is grand achievement or pointless obsession? Stumble veer with absolute absorption in a fervent love of all things Circus (until the point at which we gets distracted).

Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder. Most people experience ups and downs, (highs and lows). It is only when these become so extreme that they interfere with ordinary everyday activities, and cause you to behave in uncharacteristic ways, that it is called Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression. Between mood swings people with the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder feel and behave like anyone else with the ordinary ups and downs that anyone can experience. But the extreme highs and lows can affect not only feeling, but also thoughts and behaviour.

Cultural OlympiadBox of Frogs has been commissioned by the Unlimited programme, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Unlimited encourages collaborations and partnerships between disability arts organisations, disabled and deaf artists, producers and mainstream organisations to celebrate the inspiration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and to create original and exciting works. Twenty-nine Unlimited Commissions have been awarded.

Box of Frogs is produced by XTRAX and supported by Jacksons Lane.

    Quotes:

from a review by Terri-Anne Teo for remotegoat.co.uk

“It is the unhappy marriage of physicality and mental instability that enables Box of Frogs to convey a visceral, memorable experience. While not a typically delightful tale, the generous range of performances ensures that the sheer joy of going to the circus is not abandoned.”
